Frameworks explained

GRI vs VSME vs ESRS

Three standards you keep hearing, three very different things — plus the CSRD, the EU law that makes one of them compulsory. We have split the full comparison into two focused pages; pick the question you are actually asking.

How deep does each one go?

Roughly, from most demanding to lightest — though depth is not the same as fit.

  1. 01ESRS

    Deepest — and compulsory

Fixed disclosure requirements you cannot opt out of, double materiality, value-chain data and external assurance — for the companies the CSRD puts in scope.

  2. 02GRI Standards

    Broadest library

The largest set of topic and sector standards, and the widest global recognition — but voluntary, so how deep your report goes is partly your own choice.

  3. 03VSME

    Deliberately thinnest

Eleven disclosures in the basic module and nine more in the comprehensive one — built so a small firm can finish it in days, not weeks.

Deeper is not automatically better: ESRS only matters if you are in CSRD scope, GRI is what buyers and lenders outside the EU recognise, and VSME answers a bank questionnaire fastest.

Quick orientation: the CSRD is EU law that makes reporting mandatory for large companies, and the ESRS are the standards that law requires you to follow. The GRI Standards are the world's most widely used voluntary standards, and VSME is the voluntary standard built for SMEs. After the 2026 changes, most SMEs are outside the CSRD — so for them the real choice is GRI vs VSME, not GRI vs ESRS.
